Announced at San Diego Comic-Con by Clyde Phillips, the showrunner of the original series, this new sequel promises to thrill both old and new audiences. Michael C. Hall will once again step into the shoes of our favorite forensic technician-turned-vigilante, Dexter Morgan.

The Legacy Continues

For those unfamiliar, Dexter fascinated audiences for eight seasons from 2006 to 2013. The show followed Dexter Morgan, a Miami-based blood-spatter analyst who led a double life as a serial killer. Hall’s portrayal of Dexter also garnered critical acclaim, and his return in New Blood did not disappoint. Moreover, Hall's character, living under an alias, tried to suppress his dark urges, all while dealing with his estranged son, Harrison, played by Jack Alcott.

In a statement, Chris McCarthy, co-CEO of Paramount Global and president/CEO of Showtime & MTV Entertainment Studios, shared the excitement:

“We are thrilled to have the brilliant Michael C. Hall reprise his iconic role as Dexter Morgan in Showtime’s most successful series ever.”

He added, “Dexter: Resurrection will appeal to the tens of millions of longtime fans, and Dexter: Original Sin will introduce a whole new generation of viewers into this iconic series.”

Familiar Faces and New Stars

The original cast featured Jennifer Carpenter as Dexter’s sister, Debra, and James Remar as his father, Harry. Fans were ecstatic when Carpenter reprised her role in New Blood, despite her character’s death in the original series. Hall’s return is the highlight, however, what about the rest of the cast? Will they return?

The prequel series, Dexter: Original Sin, set in the 1990s, will feature Patrick Gibson as a young Dexter, with Christian Slater and Molly Brown taking on the roles of Harry and Debra Morgan. Patrick Dempsey will also join the cast. This new angle will dive deep into Dexter’s early years, exploring the origins of his dark urges.

As for the new sequel, Dexter: Resurrection, details remain under wraps. However, with Hall back in the lead, fans can expect the same gripping storytelling and intense performances that made Dexter a household name.

What Lies Ahead?

The Dexter franchise is expanding with multiple spin-offs. While there was chatter about continuing directly from New Blood, the franchise decided on a different route with the prequel series. Dexter: Original Sin will set the stage for the future, premiering in December 2024. Dexter: Resurrection will follow in 2025 on Showtime.

During the SDCC panel, Phillips hinted at exciting plot developments, saying, “We have so much more to explore with Dexter’s character, and the prequel series will give fans a fresh perspective on his complex psyche.”

The original series and New Blood are streaming on Paramount+ with the Showtime add-on. As a result, fans can relive Dexter’s twisted journey.

The Cast’s Future

While Hall is confirmed, fans are eager to know about the rest of the original cast. Will Jennifer Carpenter make another surprise appearance? Will Jack Alcott return as Harrison? These questions remain unanswered, but one thing is certain: The Dexter universe is expanding in intriguing ways.

Hall’s dedication to the role is evident. In an interview, he said, “Playing Dexter is a privilege, and I’m excited to delve deeper into his complex world.”

His return assures fans that Dexter: Resurrection will stay true to the character's essence while introducing new twists and turns.
